Laserfiche 8 - New Features for Volumes:
Brian Sabin, July 2008
Laserfiche 8 includes several new features for volumes, including performance enhancements, new export options, and new security and volume restriction features.
Volume Security
In Laserfiche 8, you can customize the default security for new volumes. When a volume is created, your default settings will be applied to the new volume. For example, if you want the Scanner Operators group to always have the ability to add files and create documents in volumes, but only the Administrators group to have the ability to modify and delete existing documents in volumes, you could set up default security settings for volumes granting those rights to those groups. This would not prevent you from customizing the volume settings once the volume is created; it simply defines the starting security for new volumes. This feature allows you to quickly create volumes without needing to manually reconfigure security for each one.
You can open the Default Security dialog by right-clicking the Volumes node in the Laserfiche Administration Console and selecting All Tasks. More information on default security, and other new security features in Laserfiche 8, appears in the What’s New in Security for Laserfiche 8 white paper, which you can download from the Support Site.
Export as Prior Version
When exporting a volume from Laserfiche 8, you can now choose which volume format to use. You can export a volume in formats compatible with Laserfiche 6, Laserfiche 7 or Laserfiche 8. This allows you to work with a volume and detach it for use at a site that has not yet upgraded to Laserfiche 8. (If you export a volume in a format compatible with a previous version, information that is not applicable to that version—for example, document relationship information when exporting to Laserfiche 6—will be discarded during export.)
Disabled Volumes
In Laserfiche 8, you can disable a volume, which makes the contents of that volume inaccessible. This is useful as a temporary measure, when you want to ensure that a volume will not be modified in any way for a short period of time. For instance, you might want to disable a volume when you are backing it up, to ensure that the volume files don’t change during the backup process. When you are done, you can re-enable the volume with a single click. When a volume is disabled, users cannot view or modify the files contained within that volume. They can still open documents from that volume, but they will not be able to see the pages, text or electronic files contained within that volume, make any changes to the files or add any new files. However, they will be able to see and modify information that is not stored in the volume, such as templates and fields, tags, links and other metadata.
