UBS - Your SharePoint Experts!
Christine B. Ilardi, February 2008
Poquoson, VA - February 6, 2008 - ShareWhat, you say? SharePoint is the server-side connective tissue that binds the slippery client-side outputs of office workers into a manageable, searchable, and accessible information environment.1 Basically, Microsoft SharePoint is a tool that offers an environment where office workers can be in charge of their information – how it’s organized, who gets access to it, and how it’s displayed.
This newly revised offering from the Microsoft server family is becoming the “it” tool of the future – starting today! Unity Business Systems have always prided themselves on bringing world class products and solutions to their customers and prospects; SharePoint is no exception. With many organizations, especially local government localities making the move toward office- and enterprise-wide SharePoint implementations, UBS is taking time to make their SharePoint expertise known.
There are several good reasons to implement SharePoint:
- Increase user productivity
- Reduce calls to the help desk
- Increase opportunities for knowledge transfer
- Increase employee loyalty and satisfaction
- Minimize communication barriers between departments
- Improve relationships with partners and customers
- Mitigate the risks of software development
- Maximize ROI (return on investment)
- Reduce merger/acquisition costs
- Build bridges between IT and business users
These are results that all companies – large and small – can benefit from. In essence, SharePoint is about connecting people, processes and information.
There are three levels of the SharePoint family: Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS), and Microsoft SharePoint Designer (MSD). The first two listed are the most common versions. WSS is a free add-on to the Windows Server; it offers the base collaborative infrastructure, providing editing of documents, as well as document organization, version control capabilities, wikis and blogs. It also includes end-user functionalities such as workflows, to-do lists, alerts and discussion boards. MOSS is a paid component of the Microsoft Office server suite; it is built on top of WSS and adds more functionality to it, including better document management, enterprise search capability, navigation features and RSS support.2
As an Enterprise Information Management (EIM) solution, SharePoint is an excellent option for Microsoft-centric IT organization because of its ability to integrate existing document management technology with commonly used Office desktop applications. Laserfiche Version 8.0 will have a SharePoint integration.
Whether SharePoint is a tool that is already installed and being used in your office or it is a product that the IT Department wants to put into operation in the near future, UBS can help get your office up and running. From installation and tips & tricks to administration and user support, consider UBS for all of your SharePoint needs – no matter how big or small.
